General Requirements for Police Officer
An applicant must be 20 years of age to apply. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen with no felony convictions or misdemeanor convictions involving violence or moral turpitude. Applicants must possess a valid Alabama driver's license or be able to obtain one if a license is issued by another state. Applicants must possess a diploma from an accredited high school or a GED.
Applicants with a high school diploma or GED must complete an ACT Workeys Assessment (BAT) Exam. The BAT Exam is offered at any Community College in Alabama. Applicants must meet all State of Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission requirements and the Troy Police Department requirements.
Duty Assignments
Upon graduation from the Academy, recruits will be assigned to the Patrol Division. The recruit will remain in Patrol the duration of their field training and probationary period. After building a strong foundation in patrol, the officer may apply for additional duty assignments, transfer, or promotion to one of the Department's career specialties such as:
Police Academy
Applicants who are hired, must successfully complete a Basic Police Academy for 560 hours of intense training. This 14-week Academy will giving you the foundation to beginning the highly rewarding career in Law Enforcement.
Physical Training (PT) Requirements
Physical training requires a great deal of physical strength and stamina. The physical abilities test will include such tasks as:

Complete 22 Push-Ups (Within 1 Minute)

Complete 25 Sit-Ups (Within 1 Minute)

Field Training Assignment
After successful completion of the Police Academy training, Officers will be assigned to a Field Training Officer (FTO) in the Patrol Division under the Field Training Program. The Field Training Program is designed to produce a more professional and confident police officer. This program links academy training with on the job training of a police officer in the field. A minimum of 12 weeks is spent working with a Field Training Officer.
